Breeding gilts at natural or a hormone-induced estrus: Effects on performance over four parities
نویسنده
چکیده
The exogenous gonadotropins— equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG; also known as PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)— can be used to stimulate the onset of estrus and ovulation in gilts and sows.1 The decision to employ exogenous gonadotropins, however, must take into account the possibility that using them to stimulate quiescent ovaries may result in the breeding of females that are otherwise innately relatively infertile. Should this occur, it is reasonable to expect longevity and lifetimepigs-produced in those females to be reduced. We recently examined a database in which primiparous sows received 400 IU eCG with 200 IU hCG (PG600®, Intervet; Whitby, Ontario) at weaning, and found no effect on lifetime productivity.2 The animals involved in that study, however, had some proven degree of fertility in that they had successfully delivered and reared a litter. Many animals are culled for infertility prior to producing their first litter.3 It is possible that relatively infertile gilts that farrow after being bred at a gonadotropin-induced estrus will have a reduced lifetime performance.

Validation of the use of exogenous gonadotropins (PG600) to increase the efficiency of gilt development programs without affecting lifetime productivity in the breeding herd1
The objective of this study was to validate the use of exogenous gonadotropin (PG600) treatment for stimulating estrus in noncyclic gilts and to compare lifetime productivity of gilts recorded as having natural (NAT) versus PG600-induced (PG600) first estrus in a commercial setting. Prepubertal Camborough gilts (n = 4,489) were delivered to a gilt development unit (GDU) with the goal of deliver...

The objective of this trial was to determine the effect of age at first estrus on BW changes and long-term reproductive performance of sows. At approximately 100 d of age, prepubertal C22 gilts (n = 431) were allocated to trial. At a pen average of 140 d of age, gilts began daily direct contact with mature boars to stimulate onset of puberty. Gilts (n = 317, 73%) were recorded as cyclic by 180 ...

Three hundred and five Large White (LW, 93), Landrace (L, 92), Yorkshire (Y, 69) and Chester White (CW, 51) gilts produced at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center over 3 yr with 15 to 41 gilts per breed group per year were housed in total confinement and mated to farrow at 1 yr of age. After 28 to 30 d lactation, piglets were weaned and all females were observed for estrus daily...
متن کاملOvarian reaction and estrus manifestation in delayed puberty gilts after treatment with equine chorionic gonadotropin
BACKGROUND Prolonged pre-insemination anestrus (i.e. delayed puberty) is a major contributing factor for culling up to 30% of the replacement gilts at large breeding farm units in Vojvodina. It is imperative to determine if these gilts are acyclic (prepubertal) or cyclic, but just fail to exhibit behavioural estrus. Recent investigations demonstrate that treatment with equine chorionic gonadotr...
